The Best British Cars
Every country has a particular reputation when it comes to cars. Japanese vehicles are known for their reliability, Italian cars for their beauty and speed, and American cars for being oversized and powerful. But Britain has something special – a distinct style that has given birth to some of the world’s most beautiful, and desirable cars.
When it comes to British cars, there are few that are as iconic and legendary as the Mini Cooper. Designed by Alec Issigonis, the Mini revolutionized the small car market when it was launched in 1959 and remains a cultural icon today. The classic Mini is a car that will always be in demand, even with the latest model still selling well.
The 1970s saw a number of changes to the British car industry. BMC’s new range of small family cars – including the Mini, Maestro and Montego – were all front-wheel drive, but it would be another four years before the first British manufacturers launched their own hatchback models. Meanwhile, foreign marques were gaining ground in the UK’s small car market, with the likes of the Peugeot 504, Renault 5, and VW Golf all proving popular.
MG ruled the sports car market in the 1960s and 1970s with its light, affordable MG TF and Triumph Spitfire. Both of these cars offered excellent performance and a spirited driving experience for relatively low prices.
In the luxury sector, Jaguar – founded in 1922 – made its name with sleek, sophisticated and incredibly attractive performance cars. The brand’s logo is a leaping Jaguar, which is meant to symbolize the idea of power and virility. The modern Jaguar range is a little more restrained than some of its more exotic predecessors, with the flagship F-Type providing the ultimate in British sports car refinement.
Land Rover is another brand that has become synonymous with the word ‘British’. The original Land Rover Defender was introduced in 1948 and has become a staple among off-road enthusiasts, thanks to its rugged design and impressive off-road capabilities. The Land Rover Discovery is also a great choice for those who want to enjoy the outdoors without worrying about their vehicle’s resale value.
Lotus is another British firm that made its name in the world of sports cars. Founded by maverick engineer Colin Chapman – whose Formula One racing cars won multiple world championships – the company’s philosophy was to “simplify and add lightness”. The current Elise follows in that spirit, with Chinese owners Geely funding many of the firm’s future projects, including a svelte electric SUV.
