Luxury cars have a reputation for offering more comfort, style and performance than mainstream vehicles. But are they worth the extra cost?

Many luxury car buyers have a specific reason for buying a premium automobile, whether it’s to impress business associates, show off to friends or just experience what life is like behind the wheel of something special. Others may be satisfied with a loaded mainstream vehicle at a lower price point and simply want the prestige of driving a luxury model.

A luxury car must be well-appointed with features that elevate the driver’s experience, from an intuitive infotainment system to a comfortable, opulent interior and a refined driving dynamics. Luxury models also have unique styling that sets them apart from non-luxury options, as well as a higher level of customization options to allow owners to express their individuality.

Although a luxury sedan was once the definition of a high-end vehicle, luxury cars have evolved beyond traditional limousine saloons to include hatchbacks, SUVs and even pickup trucks with a luxury twist. In the case of trucks, this often means a higher-end trim package than what is offered in regular versions.

Luxury cars are usually equipped with the latest safety and entertainment technology, sometimes before it makes its way to mainstream vehicles. For example, some luxury models offer rear-view cameras and rain-sensing windshield wipers while others feature advanced sound systems that pump out rich audio quality. Moreover, luxury manufacturers may offer these technologies as standard equipment rather than options that have to be added to the base model.

Another factor that differentiates luxury cars from their mainstream competitors is the level of craftsmanship and materials used to build them. Typically, this means more high-quality wood or leather than what you’ll find in most mass-market models. Additionally, some luxury brands focus on sturdiness and durability in their design and construction to help ensure that the vehicles hold up over time.

Aside from these factors, a luxury car’s value can be determined by its reputation and the degree to which it can stand out among similar cars in the market. For instance, Rolls-Royce is a brand that offers the ultimate in opulence and cachet, while other luxury names can be just as compelling with their own evocative designs and head-turning performance.

In addition, luxury vehicles typically receive top-notch safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. This includes scores for front or side impacts, roof strength and crash avoidance systems. If these are important to you, it’s worth checking the luxury model’s IIHS rating before making a purchase decision. Lastly, some luxury car brands also offer a premium dealership experience where you can shop for the model that best meets your needs while getting top-notch service and amenities from a knowledgeable staff. This can make the difference in your buying decision. For example, Honda’s Acura division is known for its excellent selection of luxury SUVs and sedans, including the MDX and TLX.
