A car, or automobile, is a wheeled motor vehicle used to transport passengers and goods. Most cars are designed to run mainly on roads, seat one to eight people, and have four wheels. Cars have become a vital means of transportation for millions of people around the world, and their manufacture has created many jobs, especially at factories that produce them. Millions more work at gas stations, restaurants and motels that cater to travelers. However, cars have also caused environmental problems and traffic congestion in cities.

Most of the components that make up a modern car have been developed since the early 1800s. These include the fuel system, which pumps petrol (gasoline) from the tank to the engine; the ignition system, which converts electrical energy into the chemical energy that turns the crankshaft; and the drive train, which carries power from the engine to the axles. Modern cars have a number of other systems, including air conditioning, electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes.

When people decide to buy a car, they may choose a particular brand or model because of its reputation for quality, safety or performance. They also may be attracted to a particular look or styling. Several manufacturers offer a wide variety of vehicles to choose from, including luxury cars, sports cars and pickup trucks. Some of these are manufactured by a single company, while others are assembled from parts made by multiple companies.

The best cars have a unique combination of features that sets them apart from other models in the same class. These characteristics may be subtle or obvious. Some of the most important are a comfortable ride, excellent handling and steering, good fuel economy, and good brakes.

Many of these features are the result of continuous research and development. Every new generation of cars introduces new technology, such as better engines, lighter weight materials and more advanced suspension systems. Other technologies include computer-aided design, which helps designers create and test new designs before they are built; asymmetrical steering to improve handling; automatic transmissions that reduce driver effort by varying the torque of the engine; and emissions controls that clean the exhaust.

A key reason to own a car is that it provides independence and self-reliance. Using public transport, such as buses and trains, requires a schedule to be followed. If a person misses a bus or is late for work, it can mean missing an important appointment or running out of time to complete an assignment. In addition, owning a car allows individuals to take trips for pleasure without worrying about the cost or the safety of using public transportation.

The latest vehicles combine the comfort and practicality of sedans with SUV-like off-road capabilities. This type of vehicle is referred to as a crossover or sport-ute. The vehicles are designed to appeal to people who want the versatility of SUVs but need to save on fuel costs. The popularity of these vehicles is evidence that more and more people are choosing to make the switch from traditional cars to SUVs.
