From Rolls-Royces and Bentleys to racy McLarens and Jaguars, British brands are still among the most coveted on the market today. You may even want to check out the fun MINI brand, which was born in the UK. In fact, many of today’s top luxury brands come from Britain, including the BMW Group, Volkswagen and Audi.
In the late 1970s, British cars underwent major changes. Front-wheel drive became commonplace, thanks to the efforts of BMC. In addition, the hatchback bodystyle made its debut on the Renault 16, and many of Britain’s top-selling cars were hatchbacks by the early 1980s. The Ford Mondeo, Fiesta and MG TC were the last vehicles built by BMC. However, there were many other British car models in production between the 1970s and 1980s.
Throughout the 1970s, Ford had several overseas plants. In France, it also had a factory in Toulouse, and Peugeot split up its production among French and British plants. The British company began exporting Opel vehicles to Europe, but also produced models under the Vauxhall badge in the UK. The Triumph car factory was closed in 1980. However, in the 1990s, Ford and Peugeot merged with a Spanish company, and both companies continued to manufacture cars in Britain.
Peter Jurgens, founder of British Sports Cars, grew up surrounded by British cars. He was inspired to become a mechanic from an early age, and his first cars were Austin-Healey Bugeye Sprites. The Austin-Healey Bugeye Sprite became Justin’s favorite car. He even received a Bugeye Sprite when he was only thirteen. Eventually, he moved to San Luis Obispo, California, and began his own British sports car business.
Other notable British brands include Lotus, Jaguar, Rolls-Royce, Triumph, and Morgan. The former is the most famous of all British brands with eight models in the top 100. Jaguar and Ford are the second and third most popular. The latter’s iconic F1 road car took the top spot in the top 100. The Lotus is a British icon and was launched in the 1950s. Although the car remained largely unpopular for many years, it remained popular.
Bentley, another famous name in luxury cars, is known for its luxurious vehicles. The Bentley Mulsanne is an aggressively luxurious car, complete with every luxury feature imaginable. The interior is made of sumptuous materials and a 505 horsepower V12 engine. It starts at $298,900. This car is as British as James Bond. It’s equipped with analogue dials and a 12.3 inch touchscreen.
The range of Jaguar models is extensive. The flagship Range Rover is large, while the smaller Evoque is more affordable and less expensive. The Range Rover Evoque is similar in size and price but doesn’t have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Toyota ended the production of the Auris model in 2008 and has been reintroduced in the UK. The Toyota Corolla, a model originally aimed at Americans, has returned to the market after 13 years. It’s a mid-range hatchback that competes with Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and Volkswagen Golf.
